If you want to work as a safety officer in Saudi Arabia, this guide is for you. Based on my own experience working as a safety officer in KSA, I explain the demand for safety officers, which certificate you need, roughly how much it costs, what salary you can expect at each level, and how to find a job.
Demand for safety officers in Saudi Arabia
Construction and many other industries are growing fast in Saudi Arabia. It is now mandatory for companies, whether in oil and gas or any other sector, to have a safety officer on their projects. That is why demand for safety officers is strong.
The safety officer’s main job is to make sure safety rules are followed and risks are controlled. A big part of this is the daily briefing before work starts, the toolbox talk (TBT), where you explain the safety procedures for the day’s work so that accidents are kept to a minimum.
Which certificate do you need: NEBOSH, IOSH or OSHA?
Many people ask whether IOSH or OSHA is enough. You can enter the field with them, but in the current market the requirement employers ask for is a NEBOSH certificate. NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) is a UK-based awarding body.
- You can apply and study online from Pakistan or anywhere else. You do not have to attend physical classes.
- Choose a verified NEBOSH Learning Partner. Gold-category partners usually have a higher pass rate.
- In my experience, the fee in Pakistan is roughly PKR 140,000 to 160,000, and it changes from time to time.
- There are two assessments: a theory exam and a practical risk assessment report.
- After the exams, results take about two months, then you receive your certificate.
Safety officer salary in Saudi Arabia
Salary depends mostly on your certificates and your experience. These are approximate monthly ranges from what I have seen in the market. Every company is different.
| Level | Approximate salary (SAR / month) |
|---|---|
| Beginner (0 to 1 year experience) | 3,000 to 5,000 |
| 3 to 5 years experience | 5,000 to 10,000 |
| Oil and gas / Aramco projects | 10,000+ |
| HSE Manager (around 5+ years, NEBOSH Level 6 / Diploma) | Around 18,000 to 20,000 |
The more relevant certificates and experience you have, the higher your salary will be. As you get promoted, companies often require and sponsor additional certificates.
How to find a safety officer job in Saudi Arabia
- Use job websites to apply for posted vacancies. Searching and applying is usually free.
- On Facebook, search for groups like “Safety Officer Jobs in KSA” and join them. Stay active and ask questions.
- Join WhatsApp groups for HSE jobs. A single group can have hundreds of people from the same field.
- Build connections with people already working in HSE. If you message 10 to 15 people, two or three will usually reply and help.
- If possible, do a short internship (in Pakistan, or with a friend’s company in KSA for a month or so) so you understand how the work is done on site.
As a beginner you have to put in this effort. Once you get your first job, your network grows and you keep moving up.
